Gibellina is a municipality part of the province of Trapani, with 3.712 inhabitants. The current inhabited centre, also known as Gibellina Nuova, arose after the 1968 Belìce earthquake on a site which, as the crow flies, is about 11 km from the previous one. The old centre, destroyed by the earthquake, was abandoned and in the eighties it was transformed into the Cretto di Burri, a land art work by the artist Alberto Burri.
